Homework assignments from Drawing Fundamental 1 & 2 where we were to do observational drawings of a self portraits or a skull model. In these observational drawings the goal is assemble the shapes that form the skulls and facial structures. Rather than relying on the vine charcoal to convey depth in these drawings we are challenged to convey depth using line weight. The most challenging part of these drawings was not only ensuring it looked "realistic" but ensured it was proportionally to scale.
After much trial and error, I found that starting out by gesturing the overall shape and not being afraid to erase and shave down, or increase, the drawing to the correct size elevated the quality significantly. As scene in the third image, my gesture did not even start out as the main drawing but as a reference for maintaining a similar rotation of the head.
